Alejandra Guajardo, a contestant from El Salvador for Miss Universe 2023, stunned the audience with her outfit selection on Wednesday. Guajardo took the stage at the 71st Miss Universe National Costume Show dressed in a costume that represented "the evolution of Salvadoran currency," according to the Miss Universe El Salvador official Instagram account, which also said the outfit was designed by Francisco Guerrero.
The national costume of Miss El Salvador includes cacao beans, the colón, the US dollar, and the Bitcoin symbol. Initially, cacao was used as currency in El Salvador. The colón was El Salvador's official currency from 1892 until it was replaced by the US dollar in January 2001. The primary colors of the outfit are gold, silver, and bronze.
The U.S. dollar and bitcoin are now both accepted as legal tender in El Salvador. In September 2021, El Salvador became the first nation to embrace the largest cryptocurrency as a legal tender. Since then, the country has acquired thousands of BTC for its treasury under the guidance of pro-bitcoin president Nayib Bukele. Bukele stated in November last year that his nation would buy bitcoin daily.
The digital asset issuance law that was introduced in November was approved on Wednesday by the Salvadoran legislative assembly. It includes a new set of rules for issuing Volcano bonds backed by bitcoin. According to Bitfinex, which will be the technology provider for the country's Volcano token, "This new digital asset regulatory framework paves the way for its much anticipated Volcano token issuance."
